Different Leather Sofa Couch Styles

There are lots of different styles for a leather sofa couch; just because they are made of leather doesn’t mean they are all the same!  Here are a few different styles for the sofa you might want to consider, depending on how you want your living room set up:

Sofa Sectional – Sectional sofas have become popular because you can select which pieces you need to fit your specific living room.  Not only that, you can always buy more pieces later, or rearrange them, if you move or want to give your place a different look.  Not only that, they latch on the sides so they are just as connected as sofas that were made to fit together in just one way.  These sofas are generally set up in squares and rectangles for easy arrangement.

Sleeper Sofas – These sofas look like regular sofas except for one thing; they can turn into beds!  All you do is move the pillows, and a fold out bed can be popped out for guests who are staying at your place.  They are heavier than other sofas because of the extra weight of the fold out mattress, but aside from that, they look just like regular sofas when not in bed mode.

Traditional Sofas – These sofas are about the length of a full grown person across, and generally have three seats (fits up to three people).  Traditional sofas are the most common type of sofa and they are generally accompanied with a loveseat.

Loveseats – These are sofas like the traditional sofa, only that they only have two seats and only fit two people (hence the name loveseats!).  These are sometimes used as the main sofa in small apartments or houses, but usually they are there to accompany the traditional sofa.

Chaise Sofas – These are sofas that can be part of the sectional, but with one main difference; instead of them being an end piece by having a raised edge, they are an end piece with an extended border-less cushion instead.  The point of the chaise is so that someone can stretch out their legs without hitting the raised edge on the traditional sectional end piece.

Types of Leather for Sofa Couches

Most people believe that all leather is created equal; “leather is leather.”  This idea is flat out wrong!  As long as a product is made from animal skin, it is technically “genuine leather,” but the level of quality is a whole other story.

The cheapest leather you can find is leather used in patchwork design.  It is the kind of leather generally found on jackets and purses in flea markets, drug stores, and other convenience stores.  The reason they are in patchwork design is because they are made from the leftover scraps of leather factories.  While there isn’t anything wrong with this kind of leather, you are getting the cheapest price because it is made from scraps; the quality is a big mixture of high quality and low quality leathers.

There are basically three levels of leather.  The highest level of leather is grade 1, also known as full grain.  It has the smoothest surface, is clear of imperfections, and consistent in color.  It must have a yield of 90%.  The second level is grade 2.  It is not as consistent in color and not as supple or clear of imperfections as full grade.  It must have a yield of 78%.  The last level is grade 3.  It is blotchy, has no color consistency, and is generally a little stiff.  The yield is of 40%.  So needless to say, if you are going for quality, make sure you buy full grain leather sofa couches.

The next thing you want to do is decide if you want a surface-dyed leather or an aniline-dyed leather.  A surface dyed leather means that the leather has been covered up with a paint and it can cover a lot of imperfections.  If you want more consistency to your sofa, this is a good choice, but remember that a lower quality leather can be used if you are using this kind of dye.  However, an aniline-dyed leather must be on a very high quality leather, as the surface is accentuated by a clear cover, not covered up!  An aniline-dyed couch is more valuable than a surface-dyed couch is, but that really is up to preference.
